Tourist arrivals in Boracay down almost 40% in week before closure

The number of tourists arriving in Boracay fell by as much as almost 40 percent as compared to the same period last year, in the week before the island was to be closed, according to a report on Unang Balita by Joseph Morong on Wednesday.

President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of three government agencies for a six-month closure of Boracay effective Thursday, April 26, to make way for its rehabilitation.

On Tuesday, two days before the island's closure, only a few tourists could be seen. The once vibrant night life slowed down.

Many of the performers such as singers and fire dancers said they do not know where their next gig will be.

Some residents were seen packing their belongings. They had no choice but leave since they have no jobs on the island.

An estimated 20,000 residents stand to lose their jobs due to the closure, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

However, data from the Philippine National Police showed that the number of workers who will lose their jobs will reach 35,000.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development promised to assist those who will help in the rehabilitation of the island in exchange for minimum wage.

Many of the tourists are expected to check out of hotels on Wednesday.

The No ID No Entry rule will be implemented starting Thursday. —KG, GMA News
