Solons, Zambo City mayor hurt as footbridge gives way at housing project

Two lawmakers and the mayor of Zamboanga City suffered minor injuries after the wooden footbridge they were using gave way on Thursday.

Negros Occidental Representative Alfredo Benitez, Zamboanga City Representative Celso Lobregat and Mayor Beng Climaco were inspecting a housing project for those displaced by the Zamboanga siege when the incident happened.

Benitez is the chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development.

A few minutes later, the adjacent foot bridge also collapsed.

Benitez himself tweeted about the accident, saying that the lack of maintenance for the bridge and houses is dangerous for the residents.

In a phone interview with GMA News Online, Galo Glino III, Benitez's legislative staff, said the he, Lobregat and Climaco only sustained minor injuries.

Benitez visited Zamboanga City as part of his committee's investigation into the housing units for internally-displaced persons.

Glino said Benitez's activities this afternoon in relation to their investigation will still pursue despite the accident.

"Nakita natin yung insidente ay eye opener sa pagpapatunay na meron nga talagang problema, may substandard quality yung mga itinayong housing projects dito sa Zamboanga. Tuluy-tuloy yan," he said.

He added that the collapsed wooden foot bridge will likewise be immediately repaired, as per NHA statement, and will be transformed into a concrete one in the long-run. —NB, GMA News
