Former La Union congressman, 2 bodyguards shot dead

A former congressman and his two bodyguards were killed in an ambush in Agoo, La Union on Saturday night.

Police identified the former lawmaker as Eufranio "Franny" Eriguel, former La Union Second District representative.

A Super Radyo dzBB report said Eriguel and his bodyguards were killed in an ambush in Barangay Capas in Agoo town at past 7 p.m.

Eriguel died on the spot due to several gunshot wounds. Eight other people were hurt.

The former congressman had survived a bomb attack in San Fernando City in 2016.

Four people on board a backup vehicle of the former congressman's convoy were injured in the attac k.

Eriguel, who was in a separate vehicle, survived the attack unscathed.

The former congressman was a doctor by profession. He served for two terms in the House of Representatives.

His wife, Sandra Eriguel, is currently La Union Second District's representative in Congress. —report from Luisito Santos/ALG, GMA News
