Over 8,000 people seek shelter in Cagayan evacuation centers

More than 8,400 people have sought shelter in evacuation centers in Cagayan as Typhoon Ompong continues to threaten the Cagayan-Isabela area, Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba said Friday.

In an interview on GMA News' "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon," Mamba said most of the evacuees came from homes in coastal communities.

"Kahapon pa 'yung preemptive evacuation namin. Ngayon po meron na kaming 8,465 individuals o 1,626 na pamilya ang nasa mga evacuation centers namin." Mamba said.

As of Friday afternoon, the governor said there were no problems reported on relief goods, as well as on communication and electricity in the province.

PAGASA expects Typhoon Ompong to make landfall early Saturday morning.

Powerful gusts of wind with heavy rains already began battering some areas in northern Luzon, such as Aparri and Batanes on Friday afternoon.
