Death toll in Itogon landslide climbs to 49


The death toll in the deadly landslide that hit a mining site in Barangay Ucab in Itogon, Benguet reached 49 on Sunday.

Citing information from a police source, Super Radyo dzBB's Jonathan Andal reported on Sunday that 30 of the said number of fatalities were male while four were female. The remaining 15 bodies have not yet been identified.

Earlier reports said retrieval operations resumed at 8 a.m. on Sunday, as some residents continued to evacuate to safer grounds.

Andal also reported that evacuees who chose to transfer to other provinces received cash assistance of up to P5,000 from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Meanwhile, classes are also set to resume in the area on Monday, September 24.

Itogon, Benguet is among the areas severely devastated by Typhoon Ompong as it barreled through northern Luzon, causing landslides and floods, and leaving a swathe of destruction in agriculture and infrastructure in its wake. —Anna Felicia Bajo/LBG, GMA News
