Police tag NPA rebels in Sagay killings

Authorities on Monday tagged members of the outlawed New People's Army (NPA) as the perpetrators of the shooting incident in Sagay City, Negros Occidental which claimed the lives of nine sugarcane farmers over the weekend.

In a statement, police Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao, regional director of the Western Visayas Police, disclosed the communist rebels' supposed "Oplan Bungkalan at Okupasyon," a plan "to occupy private and government properties using their mass base."

Bulalacao claimed that this was the motive in the slays of nine members of the Negros Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW).

Bulalacao has ordered field commanders to be on alert to prevent the incident from happening again.

"Let's coordinate with our counterparts from the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and other agencies so as to ensure that similar incidents will not happen again. We should use all our resources so as to stop them in doing their evil plans  in Western Visayas," Bulalacao said.

Earlier, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) linked the deadly incident to the members of the so-called Revolutionary Proletarian Army (RPA).

The members of the group supposedly became private goons, according to DAR officials, citing unnamed sources, although they are still trying to verify the information.

Agrarian Reform Secretary John Castriciones also announced the formation of a special task force to look into the incident— RSJ, GMA News
