Balangiga readies song, dance, reenactment for bells’ return to E. Samar town

The Eastern Samar town of Balangiga has laid out activities for the turnover of its three historic bells that had been taken by the Americans over a century ago as a war trophy, according to a report on Balitanghali on Thursday.

The report quoted town Mayor Randy Graza as saying performers have been rehearsing and costumes have already been made for the dancers and actors taking part in the re-enactment of the Balangiga encounter.

The stage was also designed with Balangiga bell props.

The plaza and the gymnasium were decorated with yellow and white banners inspired by the Vatican flag, the report said.

President Rodrigo Duterte originally said he would not be able to make it to the turnover event, only to take it back later.

The bells wil be on display at the Philippine Air Force Museum until Thursday afternoon. The viewing of the Balangiga bells is free of charge.

The three bells were taken by American soldiers in September 1901 from an Eastern Samar church after their retaliatory attack on Filipino guerrillas who earlier killed 48 American soldiers in storming the 9th US Infantry Regiment during the war. — Joviland Rita/MDM, GMA News
