COTABATO CITY - A few hours before the midterm elections, Cotabato City was rocked by twin explosions late Sunday evening.

Police Lieutenant Teofisto Ferrer, Jr. of City Police Precinct 2, said the explosions took place around 10:30 this evening.

“Our investigation revealed, two explosions were heard from believed to be 40mm mortar fired by unknown persons using an M-79 grenade launcher tube,” he said.

No one was hurt but the explosion occurred just outside the fence of the right wing side of the City hall compound in Purok Omar, Malagapas, Rosary Heights 10.

The police has not classified the incident as an election-related pending investigation.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has placed the entire Mindanao as a category re election hot spot.

A red classification may warrant the motu proprio declaration of Comelec control over the area concerned.

Cotabato City is also an area of security concern due to intense election rivalries that was rooted in the January 26 plebiscite this year, when there was strong opposition on the inclusion of the city in the Bangsamoro Region. — BAP, GMA News
