Abu Sayyaf supporters surrender, turn over firearms

Three supporters of the Abu Sayyaf Group surrendered in Basilan on Wednesday morning, the military said in a statement.

The supporters, who yielded to members of the 18th Infantry Battalion, were identified as Hasid Aslimto Abdurasul alias Taba, Usaimin Talih Kabong alias Ninnik, and Gerry Langkat Laikan also known as Ger.

They also turned over two M1 Garand rifles and a Thompson sub-machine gun.

They were presented to Joint Task Force Basilan Commander, Brigadier General Fernando Reyeg, at the 18th IB headquarters in Ungkaya Pukan.

The Abu Sayyaf Group is a Mindanao-based militant group that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

On the same day, 25 loose firearms were also turned over by the local chief executives of Albarka and Ungkaya Pukan to 18th IB Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Ivan San Jose.

“We are greatly happy with the unwavering support of the local chief executives in all our peace efforts,” said Lieutenant General Cirilito E. Sobejana, Commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

“In our desire to achieve sustainable peace, we continuously convince the remaining Abu Sayyaf militants and other lawless elements  to lay down their arms and return to the fold of the law,” he added. — BAP, GMA News
