Student dies after deworming in Surigao del Norte; DOH investigating

The Department of Health is investigating the death of a student at the San Isidro Elementary School in Surigao del Norte and the hospitalization of seven others after being given deworming medicines.

Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo told reporters that an autopsy had been conducted.

“Hindi pa conclusive," Domingo said of the post-mortem examination.

Samples for toxicological tests have been taken and will be examined in Manila. Results are expected this week.

The DOH is also checking the batch of medicines used in the school, as well as the supply chain.

A parental consent is needed before deworming medicines are given to students.

“Lahat naman ng gamot, may possibility of allergy. Pero kasi ito, may seven patients din, children din who had similar symptoms," Domingo said.

"That’s why we’re trying to look into it more deeply lang to check kung walang contaminant or kung walang anything na toxic substance na na-take," he added.

Domingo said deworming activities have been suspended in the area. The use of the batch of deworming medicines used in the school has also been ordered stopped.

No other incidents have been reported elsewhere. —NB, GMA News
