A dozen dead pigs found dumped behind a terminal in Nueva Vizcaya

Residents found a dozen dead pigs dumped behind a terminal in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya, according to a report by Jonathan Andal on GMA News TV's Balitanghali Weekend on Sunday.

Flies were drawn to the area where the pigs were found.

The local government immediately buried the dead pigs.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has placed more areas under quarantine for possible presence of African swine fever (ASF), Agriculture Secretary William Dar said Saturday.

These are aside from Rizal and Bulacan.

Dar however said they could not yet divulge what these areas are.

Meanwhile, more than 7,000 hogs have already been culled in affected areas to prevent the spread of ASF.

The DA appealed to hog raisers to report to local authorities if their pigs are weak, sick or have died.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Payatas in Quezon City, backyard hog raiser Edna Honoras has only three pigs in the pen.

She said she is having difficulty selling the hogs since the local government has already disallowed hog raising in the city.

"Mag-iisip na lang kami ng ibang pagkakakitaan," Honoras said.

In nearby Barangay Bagong Silangan, ASF has caused the deaths of nearly a dozen hogs, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro on Friday banned fishing in the Marikina River after dozens of the dead pigs floated down the water way the day before.

The city government is concerned that the river has been contaminated and fish caught in it could affect the health of residents.

Authorities are still awaiting the results of the testing on samples taken from the dead hogs found floating in the river.

Meanwhile, in Batangas, the provincial government has already banned the entry of hogs and pork products, especially those coming from areas with cases of African swine fever such as Rizal, Bulacan and Pampanga.

Vendors of pork meat said business has slowed down after cases of African swine fever were reported.

In some markets, the prices of pork have gone down, such as in Koronadal City.

The price of chicharon in Bulacan also decreased.

Meanwhile, despite the ASF cases, the DA said there is adequate supply of pork in time for Christmas. —KG, GMA News
