Cebu cops arrest Aussie for brutal dog killing

Sixty-year old Australian national Reeve Peter was arrested for brutally killing a dog in Cebu's Cordova town, GMA 7 news program 24 Oras Weekend reported on Sunday.

Peter was recorded on video bludgeoning the dog with a hammer and crushing its body with his truck.

He explained that what he did was a "mercy killing" because some children in the community were poisoning the dog.

While local authorities were verifying Peter's claim, he was nevertheless arrested and faced charges over violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Section 6 of the Amended Animal Welfare Act states that it was "unlawful for any person to torture any animal, to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance of shelter, or maltreat any animal or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horsefights, kill or cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat or use the same in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the Committee on Animal Welfare."

According to the Act, the penalties for unlawfully killing an animal included: "(1) Imprisonment of one (1) year and six (6) months and one (1) day to two (2) years and/or a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand pesos (P100,000.00)." — Angelica Y. Yang/DVM, GMA News
