Suspected Abu Sayyaf member nabbed, 16 pipe bombs seized during Sulu ops

A suspected Abu Sayyaf member was nabbed by government security forces during a follow-up operation in Indanan, Sulu on Tuesday.

On Thursday, authorities identified the alleged local terrorist as a certain Mang. He reportedly confessed to authorities about some improvised explosive device at a safehouse in Barangay Paligue.

The military said Mang’s confession had led to the confiscation of a total of 16 unrigged pipe bombs.

This came after three suspected suicide bombers, two foreigners and one local, were killed during an encounter in Barangay Kan Islam.

The military said the pipe bombs were similar to the confiscated explosive devices seized from the suicide bombers.

Philippine Army’s commander, Lieutenant General Macairog Alberto, lauded the troops for this another development.

“I salute the Joint Task Force Sulu troopers for their successful counterterrorism efforts in this part of the country,” Alberto said.

“Through their dedication and diligence, four ruthless terrorists are finally brought to justice. I therefore, encourage all the Alakdan Troopers to remain steadfast in your commitment to end the ASG problem here in Sulu,” he added. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
