Batangueños open their homes to evacuees

Some kind-hearted Batangueños have opened their homes to evacuees fleeing the Taal Volcano eruption.

According to a report by Darlene Cay on 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday, Reynillin Cordero of Bauan, Batangas had driven into Taal town to take her grandmother away from the danger zone.

After her grandmother was safe, Cordero returned to the town to help bring others out of the area—about 100 evacuees.

"[M]ay tumawag po sa amin na kailangan na din po nila ng rescue, that's why binalikan po namin sila," she said.

Cordero invited the evacuees to stay in her home in the meantime, including 92-year-old Estelita De Leon.

She added that they are willing to help other evacuees, as other people have also extended assistance.

Khristianne Carlo Ruiz Cos of Tanauan, Batangas, also allowed over 100 evacuees to stay with her, as a way of giving thanks that her home is outside of the danger zone. She set up a tent and some sleeping places, while her friends donated blankets, sleeping mats, and food.

Taal Volcano emitted a column of ash on Sunday, January 12, in a phreatic eruption that caused ash to spread to Batangas and nearby regions. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the danger zone.

Alert Level 4 remains over the volcano, meaning that a hazardous explosive eruption is imminent, or possible within hours or days. — BM, GMA News
