7-year-old boy in Zamboanga del Sur tests positive for COVID-19

A seven-year-old boy from Dumalinao in Zamboanga del Sur tested positive of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Governor Victor Yu announced on Wednesday.

Yu made the announcement with the provincial government's Task Force Covid-19.

Task Force member, Dr. Anatacio Cagampang said the boy travelled to Iligan City last March 14 and 15. By March 19, the boy had colds and the next day, he began coughing, had difficulty breathing and fever.

He was then admitted in the isolation area of a private hospital in Pagadian City.

A sample was taken from the patient on March 23 then he was discharged the next day because he felt better as he regained his appetite and was able to run around without catching his breath.

The boy's family, however, was advised to undergo self-quarantine in their house with the entire family while awaiting test results from the laboratory.

The family during this time is also monitored by the barangay emergency response team (BERT) of the Department of Health (DOH).

The test results were available on Wednesday showed that the patient tested positive for COVID-19. The boy was asymptomatic and did not feel sick.

At the moment, the child is monitored from an isolation area at the Zamboanga Del Sur Medical Center in Pagadian City.

The nurses and other medical personnel at a private hospital where the child was admitted are now under quarantine.

The entire barangay where the patient resides will undergo disinfection soon.

The 7-year-old boy is the third COVID-19 positive case in Zamboanga Del Sur.

As of April 1, there are 59 Persons Under Investigation (PUIs) in the province and seven of them are admitted.

Meanwhile, 2,805 are Persons Under Monitoring (PUM) and 460 of them have completed the 14-day quarantine.

The government continues its contact tracing including those who were in contact with the boy.

Governor Yu has expressed his concern over the increase in the number of PUIs in the province because the isolation earmarked by the government may be filled up soon.

So, he added, the government has started a search for a hospital that can be used as an isolation area.

“Worry talaga ako, kasi ang ating isolation area natin diyan sa Dao, darating ang punto na mapupuno ito. So as early as possible sina doktor kasama ang DOH at IPHO,naghahanap na sila ng area na pwede maka-cater ng PUI,” said Governor Yu. -- BAP, GMA News
