No total lockdown in Cavite as some residents don’t own refrigerators — Remulla

Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday clarified that a total lockdown would not be implemented in the province amid the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Remulla said one of the considerations why total lockdown will not be implemented is because a lot of residents in Cavite have no refrigerators.

Due to this, residents will not be able to store food, Remulla said.

"Wala. Ang sabi ko pinag-iisipan ko. Akala ng lahat itutuloy ko na. Pero nagkonsulta ako sa mga mayor, ang number one problema namin ay out of the one million homes sa Cavite, 120,000 walang refrigerator so kung aanuhin mo 'yan, pano sila kakain? Hindi sila makakaimbak ng pagkain," Remulla said.

According to the governor, he also asked mayors if they can distribute food to Cavite residents once a total lockdown is implemented.

"Sabi nila imposible daw, hindi nila kaya. Ang limit nila mga ano lang eh katulad sa Bacoor, mga 30,000 to 40,000 pax a day eh ang bahay doon eh 100,000 sa Bacoor... so to cover the entire city kailangan nila ng mga seven days..." Remulla said.

Remulla reiterated that a calibrated quarantine would be implemented in Cavite wherein security forces would assist local government officials.

Policemen will also be allowed to enter subdivisions to ensure that quarantine guidelines are being observed.

"Sa aking mga kababayan, pasensya na po kung medyo nalito tayo kahapon...Ang ginawa po natin calibrated na po talaga... Magkasama na ang AFP, PNP at LGU..." Remulla said. "Ang ginawa namin talagang hinigpitan namin ang quarantine rules sa mga subdivision."

According to Remulla, there are more than 160 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the province.

"Ayaw naming umabot ng 200 para macontrol na rin namin ang COVID sa Cavite," Remulla said.

Cavite, which is part of CALABARZON, is included in the government's list of areas where enhanced community quarantine is extended until May 15.

Remulla, however, said he would ask the national government if quarantine measures could be eased in areas where there is zero or just one case of COVID-19. These are Tagaytay, Mendez, Amadeo, Indang, Magallanes, Baylen, and Ternate. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
