18 get COVID-19 at home of Cebu's ‘dancing inmates’


At least 18 inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC)  have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a report on 24 Oras on Wednesday.

Quoting Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, the report said that the 18 individuals have been separated from the other inmates in the center, a maximum prison facility which came into the limelight for its “dancing inmates.”

Garcia said the 18 patients, which exhibited symptoms such as flu, are part of the 37 new cases of COVID-19 in the province.

According to the report, there are also are least 200 inmates who were found positive in the Cebu City Jail, a separate facility.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology earlier said COVID-19 cases have also been recorded in Mandaue City Jail, Quezon City Jail, Correctional Institute for Women and the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

A total of 454 COVID-19 cases with 14 recoveries and six deaths have been recorded in the province of Cebu as of Tuesday, according to the Department of Health.—Julia Mari Ornedo/LDF, GMA News
