Heavy traffic observed on first Monday in GCQ areas

Traffic build-up was observed during the first Monday in areas under the general community quarantine.

According to a 24 Oras report by Lei Alviz on Monday, public and private vehicles were already allowed to operate in areas under the GCQ, the reason for the heavy traffic in several areas in Luzon.

Traffic was seen in San Fernando, La Union after private vehicles and tricycles started plying the streets on Monday morning.

Amid the GCQ, the local government of San Fernando still imposed a number coding scheme for motorists to limit the number of vehicles on the street.

Meanwhile, heavy traffic was also observed during the second day of the GCQ in Baler, Aurora.

In Iriga, Camarines Sur, Mayor Madelaine Alfelor even helped out enforcers in easing traffic jams at a checkpoint.

However, Alfelor said she still prohibited buses and jeepneys from operating amid the GCQ.

“We made the initiative na i-limit muna ang lalabas, otherwise, kung hindi tayo magli-limit, probably ‘yong linya nito sobrang haba,” Alfelor said.

Meanwhile, in Bulan, Sorsogon and Gamu, Isabela, residents still had a hard time getting transportation due to the limited number of vehicles available.

PUVs also operated at a reduced capacity to ensure physical distancing is followed. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
