Lanao del Sur COVID-19 cases climb to 77, of which 68 are LSIs and returning OFWs

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lanao del Sur went up to 77 as of Sunday, majority of which are locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and returning overseas Filipino workers, local authorities said.

"We, in Lanao del Sur, have a total of 77 confirmed positive cases as of 8:00 am today. 68 are new cases, all locally-stranded individuals(LSI) and returning overseas workers (ROF) who started arriving on June 3," Dr. Allen Minalang, chief of the Integrated Provincial Health Office, said on Sunday.

Of the 77 cases, 48 people or 62% have recovered or were discharged from the hospital or quarantine facility, he said.

The death toll, meanwhile, was unchanged at three, representing cases reported in March and April, Minalang said.

Of the 68 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, 23 of them came from the City of Manila. Eight of them were from Cebu, five from Baguio, four from Quezon City, and the others from areas in Luzon and Mindanao.

Minalang said 20 of the new cases are residents of Marawi City. The rest were residents of the municipalities of Marantao and Bayang.

"We are now monitoring the 26 active cases who are isolated in the different quarantine facilities of the province and municipalities. 6 SUSPECTS are isolated and treated at APMC [Amai Pakpak Medical Center]," he said.

"As to age, majority of the cases belong to 20-49 years old group accounting for 76% of cases. Both male and female have equal preponderance of cases," the health official added.

Local authorities said the new cases occurred after the government allowed the Balik Probinsya and Hatid Probinsya programs starting June 3.

"The surge of new cases can be noted after the start of Balik/Hatid Probinsya Program. More than 3,000 repatriates had already arrived and continuing up to this time," Minalang said.

"We are fortunate that with our LDS Balik Probinsya Program, we were able to detect, trace and catch positive cases and prevented local transmission even as majority of them are asymptomatic," he said.

The province's COVID-19 cases numbered only nine in April. Thirty new cases were confirmed by mid-June. —with a report from Merlyn Manos/KG, GMA News
