DILG issues show cause orders vs. 8 barangay captains in Cebu City

Eight barangay captains in Cebu City were issued show cause orders for alleged violations of quarantine protocols, according to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) spokesman Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya on Friday.

At a Laging Handa press briefing, Malaya said their alleged violations include toleration of basketball games, illegal cockfighting, and curfew despite strict quarantine protocols in the area.

"Sa kadahilanan pong ito, nag-issue ang DILG ng show cause orders noong nakaraang araw, two days ago... Said barangay captains were told to reply within 48 hours," Malaya said.

He said some of the barangay captains already provided explanations on the accusations against them. It is now being studied by the legal office of the DILG.

"Kung mapapatunayan po na hindi katanggap-tanggap ang kanilang naging sagot sa show cause order, mapipilitan po ang DILG na magsampa ng kaso laban sa mga kapitan na ito sa Ombudsman dereliction of duty o grave misconduct," Malaya said.

Cebu City is the only area placed under enhanced community quarantine due to the spike of COVID-19 cases in the area. So far, Cebu City has more than 7,000 cases.—AOL, GMA News
