A suspected member of the New People's Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with soldiers and police on Saturday in Camarines Sur, the military said.

The clash occurred at 8:20 a.m. in the municipality of Lagonoy, according to the Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division.

The military said elements from the Army's 83rd Infantry Battalion and the Philippine National Police patrolled Barangay Olas after receiving a report from residents regarding the presence of alleged communist terrorists in the area.

The security forces then encountered at least 15 suspected NPA members in the area.

A gunfight ensued, resulting in the death of the suspected NPA rebel.

The Philippine Army's Joint Task Force Bicolandia chief Major General Henry Robinson Jr. said the clash prevented the suspected NPAs from carrying out terroristic attacks.

"Our top priority is to safeguard the civilians and their communities by preventing the CTG (communist terrorist group) from hampering the peace efforts of the government. Our string of accomplishments is a proof of how sincere your Army in Bicol to attain genuine peace and sustainable development. To all the Bicolanos, we are in this together. Tulong-tulong tayong tapusin ang armadong tunggalian," he said. —KG, GMA News
