Magnitude 5.1 aftershock hits Masbate


A 5.1-magnitude aftershock hit Cataingan in Masbate early Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

The quake, which was two kilometers in depth, was tectonic in origin.

It occurred at 5:50 a.m. with epicenter at 11.84°N, 124.08°E - 021 km S 26° E of Cataingan.

PHIVOLCS initially reported the aftershock as magnitude 5.2.

No damages and aftershocks are expected.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the town on Tuesday morning. A retired policeman died while over 20 were injured.

PHIVOLCS chief Renato Solidum said in a radio interview on Tuesday that "a stronger magnitude aftershock cannot be discounted." BAP/KG, GMA News
