Number of wounded in Masbate quake now 51 —OCD V

The number of individuals wounded in the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that jolted Cataingan, Masbate has reached 51, according to the Office of Civil Defense V.

In its situation report released Wednesday night, the OCD V indicated that the injured individuals came from the towns of Palanas, Pio V Corpuz, and Uson.

The Masbate Provincial Police Office had earlier reported the death of retired Police Colonel Gilbert Sauro

after his house collapsed in Cataingan during the strong quake.

The OCD also said a total of 61 residences and 19 schools have been damaged in Masbate province. Aside from homes and schools, other establishments and buildings were also damaged.

It reported that the total estimated cost of damage to roads and government public buildings in Masbate has reached P23,960,000 while damage in Camarines Sur amounted to P500,000.

According to OCD V, affected localities need tents, tarpaulin, food items, shelter kits and hygiene kits.

The local government of Cataingan has appealed to the national government for assistance as most of their funds had been used up in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malacañang said the government would extend further assistance to areas hit by the quake. According to presidential spokesman Harry Roque, food packs, water and blankets will be delivered to affected residents.

The magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Cataingan town at 8:03 a.m. on Tuesday. Intensity IV was felt in Mapanas in Northern Samar; Legazpi City in Albay; and Lezo in Aklan while Intensity III was felt in Iloilo City, and Intensity I in President Roxas in Capiz. Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
