Over 20 old flags burned in Biñan on National Heroes' Day

Over 20 old flags have been burned in Biñan, Laguna as the country celebrated the National Heroes' Day on Monday.

According to John Consulta's report on "24 Oras," the ceremony was conducted to recognize the sacrifices of the heroes who gave their lives for the Philippines.

The national flags came from various schools and government agencies in Biñan, which held a flag-burning ceremony for the first time.

"Sinunod natin 'yung ating batas, 'yung flag and heraldic code natin, na sila ay sunugin sa tamang pamamaraan," said Mayor Arman Dimaguila.

Under Republic Act 8491, a worn out flag should be burned "to avoid misuse or desecration."

The ashes of the flags were then buried under the ground as part of the ceremony.

"Inilibing natin sila para naman maipakita 'yung paggalang natin sa mga watawat natin," Dimaguila said.

In other ceremonies, frontliners were also honored as heroes amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. —MGP, GMA News
