Baguio City reopens economy under 'new normal'

By JULIA MARI ORNEDO,GMA News

Baguio City’s reopening of its economy under the “new normal” should be replicated by other local governments nationwide, the deputy chief implementer of the government’s pandemic response said.

During a visit to Baguio to inspect popular establishments along the tourist destination Session Road, Secretary Vince Dizon said the city has adjusted to the new normal.

“I think I have seen the new normal now here in Baguio City. I arrived early dito sa Session Road at marami ng mga sasakyan, nagbebenta at namimili na ang mga tao,” he said.

"Halos walang pinagkaiba sa dating Session Road maliban lang sa naka-face mask, face shield, at dumidistansya ang mga tao,” Dizon added.

Meanwhile, ride hailing app Angkas’ co-founder and Chief Transport Advocate George Royeca expressed hope that Baguio City will be the model for the reopening of the country’s economy.

“The success story of Baguio, especially in contact tracing, and preventing the further spread of COVID-19 in this prime tourist destination provides hope for other LGUs that are also hoping to open their economies soon,” he said.

“Transportation is the vehicle for the reopening of the economy. It is at the core of everything that we do when we plan an economic rebound,” Royeca added.

Tourists from Region I will be allowed to enter Baguio starting October 1 under strict health protocols. —LBG, GMA News
