Water levels in dams rise amid rainfall; PAGASA warns of possible flooding

Amid the inclement weather, the water levels in different dams in the country rose on Monday, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.

Based on a 6 a.m. update, PAGASA’s monitoring showed that the water levels in nine dams have increased as follows:

Angat Dam, which supplies over 90% percent of water supply for Metro Manila, increased from 179.59 m to 181.98 m, exceeding its minimum operating level of 180 meters.

National Water Resources Board executive director Dr. Sevillo David earlier said they are hoping to hit a target water level of 212 m for Angat Dam by the end of the year to ensure sufficient supply in Metro Manila in 2021.

Expecting the water level in La Mesa Dam to rise due to the rains on Sunday, PAGASA warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas along Tullahan River in some barangays of Quezon City, Valenzuela, and Malabon.

"All the residents living in the aforementioned areas, especially those near the riverbanks, are advised to be alert for possible floodings,” PAGASA said.

Tropical Depression Nika as well as a low pressure area (LPA) and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) will cause rains over many parts of the country on Monday, PAGASA said in its early morning forecast.

Monsoon rains due to Habagat are expected over Central Luzon, Pangasinan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country meanwhile will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to Nika, the LPA, and the Southwest Monsoon. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
