Floodwaters with lahar triggered by Rolly bury vehicles near Cagsawa Ruins

Heavy rains from Super Typhoon Rolly (international name: Goni) triggered lahar mudflows that mixed with floodwaters, burying vehicles near the Cagsawa Ruins Park in Daraga, Albay on Sunday.

Cars and tricycles were submerged in lahar, as well as establishments, according to YouScooper Petronilo Reyes.

At Cagsawa Ruins Park, floodwaters

were seen on Sunday raging near the belfry of the church that used to stand before an eruption of the Mayon Volcano centuries back.

Lahar mudflows also buried houses in Guinobatan, Albay. 

At least nine people died

in the province due to Rolly's devastation, the Office of Civil Defense Region V said.

Three people in Guinobatan were reported missing.

After Rolly first made landfall over Bato, Catanduanes early Sunday, it then made a second landfall over Tiwi, Albay.

Albay was one of the provinces placed under the highest warning, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5 on Sunday. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a warning on Oct. 31 that due to potentially high-volume rainfall, lahar and muddy streamflows from three active volcanoes may be expected in several areas along the path of Rolly.

Rolly has since weakened into a tropical storm and was traversing the West Philippine Sea on Monday morning. —KG, GMA News
