Almost 10,000 small residences in the province of Catanduanes were damaged due to Typhoon Rolly, Catanduanes Representative Hector Sanchez said on Monday.

"Partial estimate ng damaged houses is almost 10,000 and there is another 'yung malaking mga bahay, mga 3,000," Sanchez said in a briefing.

"Itong 10,000 ho 'yung mga maliliit na bahay, especially totally washed-out ito along the coastal line, 'yung mga tinamaan po ng bagyo," he added.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Ricardo Jalad were finally able to communicate with local authorities of Catanduanes after Rolly hit Bato town before dawn on Sunday.

According to Governor Joseph Cua, Rolly was stronger compared to other supertyphoons that hit the Bicol Region.

Cua said that 65% of houses made of light materials were destroyed while 20% of bigger houses were also damaged.

"'Yung tama ng bagyong Rolly kung ikumpara natin sa nakaraang supertyphoon like bagyong Rosing 1995 at 'yung huli po 'yung 2016, typhoon Nina, mas malakas po itong bagyong Rolly," explained the governor.

"Based on aerial survey ng OCD, estimated damage po 65% ng mga light materials ng bahay ang sira and about 20% ng mga malalaking bahay ang may damage."

The governor meanwhile estimated that the abaca industry, the province's main product, had suffered P400 million worth of damage.

Damage to other crops was estimated atP200 million.

"Apektado rin po ang water district, wala po kaming tubig ngayon. 'Yung may mga individual deep well na lang ang gumagana sa amin ngayon," Cua said.

Furthermore, Rolly had damaged or destroyed 80% of electric posts and other facilities in the province. — DVM, GMA News
