Quezon province braces for possible landfall of Ulysses

By JOVILAND RITA,GMA News

The province of Quezon is preparing for the impact of Typhoon Ulysses, which is expected to make landfall in the area between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV on Wednesday, Quezon Governor Danilo Suarez said authorities are making adjustments in positioning response teams as the typhoon slightly changed course.

“We're preparing for it. Medyo nag-adjust lang kami ng movement ng mga relief at medical corps ko sapagkat pumihit e (ang bagyo). Hindi bumababa, dumiretso ng pataas,” Suarez said.

Suarez added that the provincial government ordered forced evacuation of residents from areas prone to hazards like flooding and landslides.

According to Suarez, the calamity funds of the province were already exhausted in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the national government has vowed to help the province.

“Humingi na ako sa sulat sa ating Pangulo (Rodrigo Duterte), Senator (Christopher Lawrence) Bong Go, kay (Budget) Secretary (Wendel) Avisado. And they all commit na na tutulong sila,” he said.

Aside from them, Suarez said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Health, among others, assured him of assistance to the concerned residents.

Like during the onslaught of previous weather disturbances in the province, Suarez said the provincial government aims to keep the record of zero casualties amid the possible impact of Ulysses.

The classes in the province were also suspended due to the threat of Ulysses.

“Kanselado ang klase (online at modular) sa lahat  ng antas ng mga pampubliko   at pribadong paaralan sa ating lalawigan ngayong ika-11 ng Nobyembre, 2020,” Suarez said in Facebook post on Wednesday.

“Dalangin ko po ang kaligtasan ng bawat isa sa atin. Stay safe mga kalalawigan,” he added. — RSJ, GMA News
