Catanduanes 70-year-old, PWD rescued from Ulysses flooding

A 70-year-old woman and her daughter, who is a person with a disability, were rescued by Barangay Hinipaan officials from a chest-high flood in Bagamanoc, Catanduanes amid Typhoon Ulysses' onslaught.

According to Ian Cruz’s report on “24 Oras,” almost all residents of the barangay had evacuated except for Herminia Alano and her daughter.

Though the barangay returned for the pair, they were already trapped due to flooding.

“Maraming kahoy, sabi ko, dito sa loob. ‘Yung lamesa, ‘yung ano, ‘yung upuan. Hindi ko mabubuksan tapos ang ginawa nung tanod ‘yung ano, nag punta dito, pinupukpok,” Alano said.

Alano and her daughter failed to hear the barangay personnel knocking due to the sounds of the strong rain and the rushing water.

“Sabi man ung manugang ni Jerry, ayaw. Sabi malaking gastos sa bintana, ginanyan lang niya,” she added.

After breaking the window, Alano and her daughter were rescued. Alano was carried by barangay personnel.

“Puwedeng mamatay, malunod, kasi ‘yung lakas ng ano, tsaka matanda na. Nilalamig na nga raw sila, eh,” Barangay Captain Rommel Bonillo said.

Before Typhoon Ulysses hit the area, the water of the river was low. However, it quickly overflowed its banks and overwhelmed the community due to strong rains. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
