Quezon residents blame illegal logging for destruction of homes

Residents of Barangay Banglos in General Nakar, Quezon on Friday blamed illegal logging for the destruction of their houses at the height of the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses.

In the aftermath of the calamity, piles of huge logs were seen in many parts of the coastal town.

According to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras,” the residents said their houses were destroyed by tree trunks that were swept away by the floodwaters. The logs can be seen piled up about 200 to 300 meters from the Agos River.

“Parang awa niyo na po, mga illegal loggers, please tigilan niyo na po ‘yung pag puputol ng puno. Kami po ‘yung nasasalanta dito sa baba. Nakita niyo naman po ang daming kahoy,” Rosemarie De Garcia said.

Garcia said her house has been destroyed, swept away by floodwaters.

In the barangay, at least 15 houses located beside the river were destroyed.

Barangay Councilor Rey Astera said "Kung wala nang nag i-illegal e 'di siguro’y hindi ganito ang mangyayari sa aming barangay."

In the town of General Nakar, about 1,000 houses were destroyed. The residents are asking for some assistance as they build their homes again.

The GMA Kapuso Foundation delivered bags of relief goods to the typhoon victims in the town. However, with the devastation brought about by Ulysses, it would take time and more assistance for the families to recover from the tragedy.

The Foundation will proceed to Infanta, Quezon on Saturday to distribute relief goods. -- Joahna Lei Casilao/BAP, GMA News
