12 areas positive for shellfish poison —BFAR

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on Wednesday announced that shellfish collected from 12 areas in the country were found positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond regulatory limit.

In an advisory, BFAR said that all types of shellfish and acetes, or alamang, gathered from the following areas are not safe for human consumption:

“Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking,” BFAR said.

BFAR also said coastal waters of Inner Malampaya Sound, Taytay in Palawan was found positive for red tide toxin.

Moreover, coastal waters of Bataan, coastal waters of Daram Island, Cambatutay, Irong-irong, Maqueda and Villareal Bays in Western Samar, and Cariga Bay in Leyte were declared free of the toxic red tides. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BM, GMA News
