Bulacan gov’t wants firecrackers sale regulated, not banned

Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando on Wednesday said he will appeal to President Rodrigo Duterte to not totally ban firecrackers in the country next year and instead regulate its  sale.

According to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras,” over 300,000 persons dependent on the industry will lose their livelihood if firecrackers will be totally banned in the country next year.

Duterte earlier said he is planning to issue an order to ban the manufacture, sale and use of firecrackers.

“Aapila tayo sa pangulo at makikiusap tayo na baka puwedeng ito ay tuluyan na lang i-regulate. I-regulate na lang para hindi ito mawala sa’tin dahil isa tayo sa mga kinikilala na manufacturer ng paputok,” Fernando said.

Firecracker vendors, meanwhile, asked Duterte to reconsider his plan as they will lose their source of income.

“Ito na po ang tradisyon ng mga Pilipino. Sana po ay buhayin po natin muli, ‘wag po nating unti-unting patayin,” Josefina Santiago said.

It was not the first time that Duterte had broached the idea of banning the use of firecrackers.

In January 2019, the president said he would issue an executive order to end the use of firecrackers.

Two years ago, Duterte also ordered the suspension of processing of new licenses and permits for the manufacture, sale, and distribution of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

He also directed the confiscation and destruction of prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices as well as firecrackers used outside community fireworks displays.—Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
