Special forces in Sulu recover ASG firearms, speedboat —AFP

Special forces in Indanan, Sulu on Monday recovered firearms and a speedboat allegedly from the Abu Sayyaf Kidnap for Ransom Group, Joint Task Force Sulu said.

In a statement on Tuesday, JTF Sulu said that 11th Infantry Division commander Major General William Gonzales, operating troops of the 4th Special Forces Company and the 2nd Special Forces Battalion under the 1101st Infantry Brigade were able to recover high-powered firearms and other war materiel in So Andihi, Barangay Malimbaya.

The operation resulted in the capture of a speedboat, one M16 rifle attached with M203 grenade launcher, several magazines and ammunition, one hand grenade, seven cell phones with sim cards and several personal belongings.

The report submitted by the 1101st Infantry Brigade indicated that the combined elements of 4SFC and military intelligence units with follow-on combat teams of 2SFBn were operating to neutralize ASG-KFRG member Injimar Mangkabong and his cohorts when they captured the items.

“The operation’s success was a product of civilian tipped-off information and can be attributed to the positive collaboration between civilians and the military. Continuous operations also constricted the mobility of said terrorists which forced members to surrender to the government,” Gonzales said.

Last weekend, 17 members of the ASG surrendered to the 11th Infantry Division. Ten firearms were yielded.

Gonzales said the capture of the ASG materials and the recent surrenders are putting the ASG in a “disadvantaged position” as the terrorist groups “scramble” to fill their logistical needs while trying to evade the military operations of the government's security forces.

“Once again, a kidnapping is foiled. This means no food and no ammunition for the ASG bandits. We are taking this opportunity; the Special Forces is in pursuit and the rest of the 1101st troops are on the lookout,” Gonzales said. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BM, GMA News
