No significant damage from Mag.-7.1 Davao quake —PHIVOLCS


There were no significant damage reported following Thursday night's magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Davao Occidental, according to PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Renato Solidum on Friday.

Interviewed on Unang Balita, Solidum said PHIVOLCS has recorded 15 aftershocks so far and more are expected although these may not be felt.

"Posible pa pong magkaroon ng aftershocks pero karamihan po diyan ay hindi mararamdaman sa sobrang layo ng epicenter ng lindol," he said.

The tectonic quake's epicenter was traced at 05.02°N, 127.66°E - 244 km S 66°E of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental. It had a depth of focus of 111 kilometers.

Intensity V was felt in General Santos City, while Intensity IV was felt in Davao City and Intensity II at Bisig City and Surigao del Sur.

Instrumental Intensities were also felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V - Kiamba, Sarangani
  • Intensity IV - City of General Santos; Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal City, South Cotabato
  • Intensity III - City of Kidapawan City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur; City of Gingoog, Misamis Oriental
  • Intensity II - City of Cagayan de Oro; City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte; City of Borongan, Eastern Samar
  • Intensity I - City of Catbalogan, Samar

There was no threat of tsunami following the earthquake, Solidum said.

"Pagdating sa lindol, malakas po iyon pero wala namang tsunaming maidudulot kaya naglabas tayo agad ng advisory na walang tsunami threat," he said. --KBK, GMA News
