Two mothers arrested for trafficking children online

Operatives of the Philippine National Police Women and Children Protection Center (PNP-WCPC) on Friday arrested two mothers who were allegedly trafficking their four children and niece online, according to Marisol Abdurahman’s report on “24 Oras.”

The suspects, who are siblings, were found by PNP-WCPC in Baliuag, Bulacan based on information provided by the United Kingdom Prime Agency.

“Ni-refer sa atin ‘yung kaso na meron pong facilitator dito sa Pilipinas na nagpapakalat ng mahahalay na larawan ng mga bata at videos,” Police Colonel Sheila Portento of the PNP-WCPC said.

The suspects allegedly said they began trafficking during the coronavirus disease pandemic.

However, the PNP-WCPC countered that they had information that proved that the pair started operating three years ago.

Authorities also retrieved various gadgets used by the suspects.

The five children are now under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. They will undergo psycho-social intervention.

Meanwhile, Portento said numerous charges will be filed against the suspects for violations of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012, the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, and the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Data from the WCPC also showed that operations conducted against internet crimes against children rose to 58 in 2020 from 36 in 2019.Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
