Hot weather kills bangus, chickens in provinces

Severe heat on Wednesday killed tons of bangus in Dagupan, Pangasinan and several chickens in Vintar, Ilocos Norte.

According to Cedric Castillo’s report on “24 Oras,” this forced bangus growers such as Larry Salayog to retrieve around 3,000 bangus from the fish ponds even though some are still small.

“Nagbabawas kasi kaya kwan, inano na namin. ‘Yung amo ko aborido. Gusto niya ‘yung tira niya kahit mabalik lang,” Salayog said.

Meanwhile, the City Agriculture Office assured that the supply of bangus in the market will remain sufficient.

“‘Yung mga ganitong season talaga may mga nangyayari na tumatangok ang mga isda. So far, hindi naman massive but syempre kailangan natin ng intervention,” Vlad Mata, Dagupan Agriculture Office OIC, said.

(During seasons like this, this kind of thing happens. So far, it’s not massive and, of course, we need to intervene.)

Meanwhile, several chickens have also died in Vintar due to the hot weather.

According to chicken owner Robert, two chickens have died per day since Saturday. He said the chickens suddenly fall over.

Robert said the chickens still die though they try to make them drink water.

The Provincial Veterinary Office said the chickens may be dehydrated due to the severe heat. They must be placed in a good roomy coop.—Joahna Lei Casilao/LDF, GMA News
