Two missing as Dante causes floods in South Cotabato

Two people were missing as heavy rains from Tropical Depression Dante caused flooding in South Cotabato over the weekend.

The missing persons were a father and son who stayed in their field in the municipality of Norala to keep watch over their ducks, according to a report by Darlene Cay on Unang Balita on Monday.

However, the river nearby overflowed its banks, flooding their area.

According to the mother, her son was able to call her to ask for help. However, the father and son could no longer be contacted afterward.

Authorities conducted a search and even went to other barangays to look for the two missing.

Meanwhile, several hectares of rice fields and fishponds in Norala and Banga were flooded due to heavy rains from Dante.

A drone video showed widespread flooding in the rice fields of Norala.

Floodwaters, which reached waist-deep, also entered some houses.

Five barangays were affected by the flooding in Norala. Residents were evacuated.

In Banga, floodwaters also entered some houses.

Some animals like chickens also drowned and died.

A fishpond owner said he lost 10,000 kilos of fish due to the flood.

Residents tried to save some of the fish.

Meanwhile, in General Santos City, heavy rains poured and thunderstorms and lightning were observed.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office was on the alert and advised residents especially those living beside river channels to take the necessary precautions.

Dante intensified into a tropical storm on Monday.

It is expected to bring heavy rains over Caraga, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental on Monday, PAGASA said. —KG, GMA News
