Pinoy flies hoverboard over Subic in attempt to break world record

A Filipino on Saturday flew over Subic in Zambales on a hoverboard in an attempt to break the current world record.

Kyxz Mendiola, a flying drone car builder and professional hip-hop dancer, flew the Filipino-made hoverboard over the SBMA Freeport Zone for 2.89 kilometers at a height of 30 feet, longer than the current record of 2.2 kilometers, according to a report by Raffy Tima on 24 Oras Weekend on Saturday.

The hoverboard, done by Star 8 Green Technology Corporation, ran on battery. Total flight time was seven minutes and 22 seconds.

"Sa flight data namin, we actually got 2.89, wow, kilometers. So more than what we were expecting. Our goal was only 2.5 kilometers," Mendiola said.

He added that they will submit the feat to Guinness World Records.

The current world record for the farthest hoverboard flight is 2.25 km, achieved by Frenchman Franky Zapata in April 2016. Zapata used a Flyboard Air powered by jet engine propulsion.

Kyxz's father Edwin Mendiola witnessed his son's flight on Saturday and was ecstatic about the achievement. Edwin said he saw his son build the hoverboard in their house for seven years.

"Hindi ko pa masyadong ma-realize paano sakyan. Pero noong nilatag na niya 'yung mga aluminum sa bahay, ba, sabi ko, totohanan na ito," he said.

(I could not realize at first how one could ride the hoverboard. But when he assembled the aluminum at home, I said, this is it.)

Mendiola has partnered with Star 8 to make flying e-cars. In 2018, he drove an Electric Manned Aerial Vehicle Future 8 (EMAV) in a demonstration at the Star 8 grounds in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. —KG, GMA News
