Over 15,000 people affected amid Taal Volcano’s unrest —NDRRMC

At least 15,473 people or 4,363 families were affected by the ongoing activity of the Taal Volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Tuesday.

In an update, the NDRRMC said these affected individuals were reported in 121 affected barangays.

A total of 5,620 people or 1,570 families evacuated from their homes and were staying in evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, 9,853 individuals or 2,793 families were staying outside evacuation centers.

According to the NDRRMC, a total of 23 evacuation centers are open to accommodate affected residents.

On Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it recorded 171 volcanic earthquakes in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over the volcano, which means an explosive eruption may occur due to magma extruding from the main crater. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
