GMA News TV’s Anak TV awardee program “Ang Pinaka” goes international in search of the top 10 hottest dining spots in Hong Kong. With guest host Bettina Carlos, “Ang Pinaka” explored the culinary capital of Asia.

10. Ho Wah Tea Restaurant


 

Ho Wah Tea restaurant is famous for their signature lai cha or milk tea. Unlike in the Philippines where milk tea is just considered a ‘food craze,’ milk tea has been a part of Hong Kong’s food staple since the British colonization.

Fans of the movie Forrest Gump might remember the scene where Forrest and his friend Bubba talk about setting up their own restaurant. Taking inspiration from the popular film, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. & Restaurant was established in California in 1996 and was opened in Hong Kong ten years after.

The house speciality, of course, is fried and chili shrimp. Other bestsellers include Dixie-style baby back ribs, Run Across America Sampler, and Forrest’s seafood feast.

8. Lau Sum Kee Noodles

Lau Sum Kee Noodles is one of the oldest noodle houses in Sham Sui Po, Hong Kong. Locals and tourists alike troop to this restaurant for bamboo-kneaded noodles. Lau Sum Kee Noodles stays true to the art of traditional noodle-making by still using jook sing mein or bamboo rollers to knead the dough.

7. Tapagria

Tapagria is a high-end Spanish bar and restaurant owned by the famous Hong Kong actress Carina Lau. Tapagria offers a wide selection of tapas (‘tapa’) and sangrias (‘gria’), two Spanish food staples from which the restaurant’s name was derived.

Tapagria prides itself for having 65 concoctions of sangrias. The restaurant also boasts of their bestsellers paella, VIC (very important croquettes), crispy suckling pig, and grilled Galician-style octopus.

6. Harlan’s

Harlan’s is popular for their Western and continental cuisines. Their bestsellers range from Asian dishes like Japanese Kobe beef to fusion French cuisine with their U.S. Prime breef foie gras terrine, rucola and truffle dressing. Other must-trys at Harlan’s include their sea salt-baked whole jet fresh fish and Spanish prawns spaghetti with Italian tomatoes.

5. Tim Ho Wan

More than a hundred years ago, tire manufacturer brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin came up with a restaurant guide for French motorists. Each restaurant in the list is awarded one to three stars making them an official part of Michelin’s roster of “Best Value Restaurants.” Standards of the Michelin guide is so strict that to garner one star is already considered as a huge achievement for restaurants from around the world.

In Hong Kong, Tim Ho Wan is said to be the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant in the whole world. The restaurant acquired the blessing of the award-giving body because of their “to-die-for” dumplings and steamed and fried pork buns, for which locals and tourists alike line up for hours.

4. La Cabane

La Cabane is an authentic French bistro famous for their selection of “organic, dynamic, and natural” wines. The restaurant initially sold wine bottles but soon expanded their menu for customers who plan on pairing their good wine with good food.

Must-trys from La Cabane’s menu are their steak tartare and cheese platter. For their wine selection, try their Morgon 2011.

3. Mak’s Noodle

Mak’s Noodles is one of the oldest noodle houses in Hong Kong. The restaurant has already been operating for around 60 years in Hong Kong.


The bestsellers from Mak’s Noodles’ menu are their beef brisket with noodles in soup and spicy pork noodles. The noodles, however, are served in small serving bowls, much to the disappointment of customers. But for those running Mak’s Noodles, serving in small bowls actually enhances the culinary experience as small bowls help avoid making the noodles soggy because of too much soup.

2. Common Room

Common Room is the latest gastrobar in Hong Kong foodies visit for “classic, contemporary, and molecular food and cocktails.”

Common Room offers a tapas-style menu to go with their cocktails. Crowd favorites include Wagyu foie gras burger and lobster linguine.

FINDS is an iconic Scandinavian restaurant and bar famous for introducing the flavors of Finland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The name of the restaurant is actually an acronym of these five Scandinavian countries.

From their menu, customers can’t get enough of the the diver’s scallop from Norway and from Sweden, the venison rydberg.
