At least 11 more overseas Filipino workers are due for repatriation from strife-torn Syria on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement, the DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Damascus led by Charge d' Affaires Olivia Palala, continues its repatriation efforts in Syria.
The DFA said six will arrive aboard two flights on Maundy Thursday while five will arrive aboard one flight on Good Friday. The flights include:
- one aboard Emirates Airlines Flight 334, 3:55 p.m. Thursday
- five aboard Emirates Airlines Flight 332, 9:55 p.m. Thursday
- five aboard Emirates Airlines Flight 332, 9:55 p.m. Friday
The DFA said this would bring the total number of repatriates to 1,221.
"The Philippine Embassy in Damascus will bring as many Filipinos as possible out of harm's way without any delay even during Holy Week," DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said.
47 expected home by Wednesday night
Meanwhile, an updated DFA news release posted on the Official Gazette website said 47 OFWs were expected home by Wednesday night, four more than the 43 the DFA initially reported earlier in the day.
It said these OFWs were to arrive in four batches, including 39 aboard a Philippine Airlines flight, one aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight, three aboard Etihad Airlines, and four aboard Emirates Airlines.
According to the DFA, the security situation has seriously deteriorated since the Syrian uprising began in January last year.
It had prompted the Philippine government to raise the alert level on Syria to "4," which entails mandatory repatriation of all Filipinos from the country.
The Philippine government is exerting efforts to bring Filipinos out of Syria, especially those in the violence-ridden areas of Homs, Idlib, Hama, and Dara'a.
Meanwhile, the DFA reiterated its appeal to the kin of OFWs in Syria to provide information on the whereabouts of their loved ones in Syria as well as their latest contact details.
