Cagayan university dance troupe raises funds in Vietnam for 'Sendong' victims
A university dance troupe raised more than $1,600 cash in Hanoi, Vietnam for rehabilitation efforts in areas devastated by tropical storm "Sendong" (international name: Washi) in the Philippines. According to a news release of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Liceo Folkloric Dance Troupe of Liceo de Cagayan University displayed outstanding dancing skills in Vietnam. On April 16, the group performed in Hanoi before an audience that included members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Filipino Community and Vietnamese friends. "Liceo Flokloric Dance Troupe has been instrumental in propagating the diverse culture of Mindanao, not only in the Philippines, but also overseas by providing an avenue for cultural awareness and preservation through performances that use, most especially, southern Philippine images in dance, music and drama," the DFA said. The DFA said Liceo has performed in dance festivals in Brunei, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The dance troupe started in 1983 as a contingent in Kagay-an Festival, an indigenous dance competition in Cagayan de Oro City. It has since earned fame as one of the leading cultural dance theater groups from Southern Philippines. The DFA said the performance of Liceo was made possible with the help of the following:
