Pinoy Pulitzer winner Jose Antonio Vargas' film to premiere in US in June
The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the theatrical premiere of two documentaries, including “Documented,” written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas.
The event known as AFI Docs by Audi will be held June 19-23 with screenings and other activities at venues on the National Mall and in the Penn Quarter area, as well as at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Maryland.
“Documented” explores immigration in America through the lens of Vargas’ personal story as one of the country’s most prominent undocumented immigrants who himself is documenting America’s growing undocumented immigrant movement. The film is co-directed by Ann Lupo.
“’Documented’ confronts a critical issue that could not be more timely and relevant,” the AFI said in a press statement.
The other film to premiere with “Documented” is “Letters to Jackie,” featuring letters from the public written to Mrs. Kennedy following the assassination of her husband. They will be read by celebrities, such as Viola Davis, Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Allison Janney, John Krasinski, Melissa Leo, Laura Linney, Frances McDormand, Mark Ruffalo, Octavia Spencer, Hailee Steinfeld, Channing Tatum, Betty White and Michelle Williams. “Letters to Jackie” was written and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Couturié.
