An Ambassador’s ultimate sacrifice
The fourteenth death of a Filipino abroad due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) reported by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is that of a dedicated career diplomat, Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Bernardita “Bernie” L. Catalla.
With her untimely demise, the DFA said they are painfully reminded that the personnel in their foreign service posts likewise face, together with all our kababayan abroad, the challenges brought about by this dreadful COVID-19.
Furthermore, the DFA stated that the memory of Ambassador Catalla’s ultimate sacrifice in the service of the Filipino people will inspire those who remain to strive even harder in the face of adversity.
In a statement, the DFA said, “Bernie, as she was fondly called, has always lent a helping hand to her family, friends and colleagues."
"Her ever ready smile and infectious laughter may have been extinguished but her dedication to our country will always be there as a guiding light for all members of the Philippine foreign service.”
Earlier today, a memorial prayer, mass for the late ambassador was held at the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong where she was previously assigned as Consul General.
Catalla passed away on April 2, 2020 due to COVID-19.
As of April 8, 2020 sixty eight (68) Filipinos abroad have died due to COVID-19, A total of 594 overseas Filipinos have been infected by the virus in various countries and regions according to DFA data. -- BAP, GMA News
