After evacuating from Sudan, a Filipina wife, with her three daughters, had an emotional reunion with her Sudanese husband in Egypt.

Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople shared this story of Filipina Evelyn Ali Hamid and her husband Hassan I. Ali Hamid. The couple have been married since 2004.

They last saw each other in Sudan at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, before Hassan returned to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

When he heard about the crisis in his country, Hassan said he could not do anything but cry and pray for his family in Sudan.

The Philippine government helped evacuate Evelyn and her daughters Bothina, Maryam, and Jehan, along with other Filipinos, out of Sudan.

They traveled for a week and reached the Egypt-Sudan border in Argeen.

“When he was informed by his wife that they are now safe in Cairo, Egypt, he immediately took the first flight yesterday (30 April) from UAE with the hope and prayer for the safety of all,” Ople said.

The Hamid family was seen in a video shared by the DMW chief, crying and hugging each other as they reunited in a hotel in Egypt on Sunday night.

Hassan thanked the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Philippine Ambassador to Egypt Ezzedin Tago, for the assistance provided to his family.

The DFA said on Monday that at least 616 Filipinos had been evacuated from Khartoum, Sudan. More repatriations to the Philippines were expected in the next few days.

Around 750 Filipinos in Sudan, most of whom were undocumented, had sought the Philippine government’s help amid the ongoing clashes between the Sudanese military and a paramilitary group. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
