Filipinos in California told to prepare for evacuation amid extreme fire weather

The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles told Filipinos in parts of California to prepare for evacuation amid the extreme fire weather which could trigger wildfires.
Red flag warnings are in effect in parts of southern California from 8 a.m. Monday, January 20 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 21.
Meanwhile, Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) red flag warnings will take effect from 12 noon Monday, January 20, to 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 21 in the following areas:
- Santa Clarita Valley
- Ventura County Beaches/Inland Coast/Valleys/Mountains
- Malibu Coast
- W Santa Monica Mountains
- San Gabriel Mountains & HWY 14
- E & W San Fernando Valleys
- Santa Susana Mountains
- Interstate 5 Corridor
- Calabasas & Agoura Hills
- N HWY 210, Altadena, Glendora
“Critical fire weather conditions are expected. Extreme caution is advised. Those near wildland areas should be prepared to evacuate in case of a wildfire,” said the Consulate in an advisory.
Red flag warnings indicate dry and windy conditions that could lead to the rapid spread of a wildfire, while a PDS red flag warning signifies elevated fire weather conditions.
With the very low humidity and stronger winds, the National Weather Service (NWS) in the US said such conditions could increase the risk of fire danger.
The NWS advises everyone that throwing away cigarettes or matches out of moving vehicles is not allowed when red flag warnings are hoisted, as it may ignite dry grass and may cause wildfires.
Authorities also warned the public not to leave a fire unattended, as sparks and embers can blow into leaves or grass, which could ignite a fire.
For Filipinos who may require assistance, they may reach out to the consulate through (323) 528-1528. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
