Pinoys abroad urged to register online for 2019 elections

Filipinos abroad who want to participate in the May 2019 midterm elections and the subsequent elections are encouraged to register online via the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) iRehistro facility.

"We encourage Filipinos registrants abroad to file their applications online through the iRehistro facility at www.comelec.gov.ph," said Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez in a statement Thursday.

"This alternative system of registration was a major contributor to the high registration turnout for overseas voting for the May 2016 elections," he added.

iRehistro was launched in Madrid in May 2014 and has since been expanded to 85 foreign service posts worldwide.

Jimenez said Filipinos abroad can secure the Overseas Form No. 1 (OVF 1) through the websites of the Comelec, Department of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Filipino Overseas Voting.

The OAV registration will be from December 1, 2016 to September 30, 2018, according to Comelec Resolution 10167, promulgated October 28, 2016.

Section 6 of the Resolution states that: "All citizens of the Philippines, who are at abroad or will be abroad during the thirty (30) day voting period, at least eighteen (18) years of age on the day of the elections and not otherwise disqualified by law, may register.”

Based on Comelec data, a total of 1,376,067 overseas Filipino voters registered worldwide for the May 2016 elections. Of the number, 1,326,728 were land-based voters while 49,339 were seafarers.

In the 2013 midterm elections, there are a total of 737,759 overseas voters registered. —KBK, GMA News
