Registration for the overseas absentee voting for the 2019 midterm elections will start on Thursday, December 1 (Philippine time), according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Filipinos working or living abroad who are interested to participate in the 2019 elections can submit their applications to Philippine embassies or consulates or in authorized field registration centers, the Comelec said.

"We are ready for the next round of registration of overseas voting in the various posts as well as in the designated registration venues in the Philippines," said Comelec Commissioner Arthur Lim.

The registration period will run until September 30, 2018, but "September 30 is Sunday, so effectively up to September 29, 2018 only," Lim said.

With this, Lim reminded those who will be applying for registration to bring the necessary documents, such as a valid passport.

He also urged to Filipinos abroad to register for them to able to exercise their right to suffrage.

"I would like to take the opportunity to appeal to our kababayans abroad to exercise their right to suffrage and register early. Take time to register and of course to vote during the voting period," he said.

Once they are registered for the OAV, they will eligible to cast their votes for senators and party-list groups during the 30-day voting period, which will run from April 13, 2019 until May 13, 2019.

The poll body is looking to register some 600,000 Filipinos abroad to register during the OAV registration period. In the May 2016 polls, there were a total of 1,376,067 registered overseas absentee voters. —KBK, GMA News
