No Pinoys hurt as Mangkhut lashes Guam —consul general

No Filipinos were hurt in the onslaught of Typhoon Mangkhut in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, with Consul General Marciano de Borja chalking this up to early preparation.

"Wala pa pong reported Filipino casualties or injuries sa Guam at Northern Mariana Islands," De Borja said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV.

There are at least 43,000 Filipinos in Guam, he said.

De Borja said the government of Guam had ordered the closure of schools and businesses for Monday and Tuesday as early as Friday last week in anticipation of Mangkhut.

He said this allowed residents to prepare for the typhoon.

"Ilang araw pa bago tumama... talagang nakapaghanda dito. Friday pa lang nagbabala na ang government ng Guam," De Borja said.

"Yung mga Pilipino dito, alam nila na hindi puwede balewalain 'yung mga babala," he added.

Although the island experienced strong winds, De Borja said Guam was not directly hit by the typhoon.

"Napakalakas ng hangin pero hindi naman ganun kalakas," he said. —KBK, GMA News
